How Much Goldfish Food per Feeding
Goldfish are cold blooded which means they don’t need as much food as warm blood creatures. Since gold blooded animals don’t need to use energy to heat themselves up, they can go much longer without being fed. A goldfish could go a week or longer without eating; they will be hungry but not starving. Goldfish won’t shrivel up and die but they will stop growing during that time. When a goldfish finally starts eating again, it will continue to grow again. Underfeeding is rarely the cause for concern; it’s overfeeding that causes the most problems.
Here is the rule of thumb for feeding goldfish; only feed goldfish as much food as they can eat in 2-3 minutes. Over feeding can be fatal because goldfish are opportunistic scavengers and will continue to eat as long as there is food in the tank. This can lead to a burst intestine. That means they die. Over feeding will not make them grow faster; it is more likely to kill them. If you want them to grow, give them plenty of space to grow and maintain the health of the tank.
How Often to Feed Goldfish
There is no clear answer to this question. In the wild, goldfish eat tiny meals throughout the day and are healthy. Smaller meals more frequently are easier on the digestive tract of a goldfish. Small meals include a few flakes or pellets per fish. Observing goldfish during feeding time will help goldfish owners know if there goldfish need more food. If the goldfish appear to still be in a frenzy when all the food is gone, they might need a bit more next during the next feeding. It’s important to observe all the goldfish individually to see if they are getting their fair share.

I’m sorry to hear that. You probably needed to provide them with a little more care. If you get new goldfish, put them in a tank that has some gravel and filter, even if it is just a small filter. This will grow beneficial bacteria in the water. Setup your tank and let it sit for two weeks before you get a new goldfish. Or you can buy some beneficial bacteria to help get the tank going. Ask the fish expert at the pet store what they might recommend. Also get a test kit to test for ammonia. if the ammonia levels are high, you need to change some or all of the water.
Try feeding it another type of food. If it’s a new goldfish, give it some time to adjust and don’t worry if it doesn’t eat for a few days; goldfish can live without eating for a week or more.
The last two goldfish that I had died the second day.
My fish doesn’t eat.
If your goldfish is new, give it some time to adjust, it will eventually start eating. if not, try another type of food. Also, goldfish love to nibble on food that is on the bottom so watch for that and see if it is eating.
I fed my goldfish yesterday after noon but have noticed that it’s not eating it. It just swims at the surface in circles. All the food fell to the bottom.
You can feed a goldfish blood worms but realize that a goldfish is primarily a plant eaters so you shouldn’t only feed your goldfish protein. The rule is to only put in enough food that will be eaten in one or two minutes; anymore food left after two minutes should be removed. In terms of flakes, you can feed your goldfish, three to five flakes, several times a day. It’s better to feed little meals more frequently. So perhaps feed your goldfish 5 blood worms or so. But again, you should consider getting some fish food flakes too; the ingredients are usually pretty well balanced.
I want to feed my goldfish blood worms – like I feed my frogs. The worms come frozen in cubes. How much do I feed ? Do I feed weekly?
Or – should I get something else?
Is it bad to feed a goldfish betta pellets?
Only feed it a three to five flakes at a time. It’s best to under feed the goldfish because over feeding will cause the water to become dirty very quickly. You should change the water in a small bowl every other day if not daily. The larger the tank, usually the less often you have to change the water. You should keep the bowl in a room that has a consistent temperature. Avoid placing it in sun lit windows or air conditioning vents. At minimum, you should add some aquarium gravel and a plastic plant or two for your goldfish to hide in and around (live aquatic plants would be even better). If you can, consider upgrading to a bigger aquarium.
