Sick Goldfish: Common Problem
First: Don’t attempt to pick up or handle your goldfish because it will rub off the protective slime coat layer which helps the fish stay healthy.
Goldfish Constipation: Symptoms include the goldfish floating on its side on top of the water, or it has a swollen belly. The Cure is to add greens to it’s diet, Peas are a great food to include in their diet. It helps like a laxative. Live plants will also help with this problem.
Swim Bladder: Symptoms include an inability to stay upright. the goldfish might face downwards, on its side or even upside down. It is not to be confused with constipation but treating the goldfish with the same methods as stated above can help minimize the effects of swim bladder. There is no cure to swim bladder as it a genetics problem. read more about swim bladder disease
Goldfish Ich or Ick: Ichtyopthirius Symptoms include white spots on the body or fins and sometimes rapid gill movement. Cure it by cleaning your tank entirely (to remove the parasite that may be growing) and contacting your pet store for for Ich medication. However, those can be rough on goldfish so try using salt at a level of (3 teaspoons per gallon). Not all fish can handle this so make sure you only treat your goldfish.

Oh that’s unfortunate. I would try to add some aquarium salt to see if that helps.
i have a black bug eye gold fish and it had a bowl movement and the color was red, now he is floating half sideways barely moves around thought he was dead a few times, what should i do?
yeah, some people don’t like flakes for that reason but you can also pre soak them to help them sink, this way they won’t float on top. pellet tend to float too. I’ve used flakes for a long time and I never really had any problems. Yeah that brand is good especially if you get the type that is meant for the type of goldfish you have. You can always add in some green peas every so often to help keep your goldfish’s digestive system working well.
Apparently flakes aren’t good for goldfish, as they gulp in to much air.
So r pellets the way to go then?and is that hikari goldfish food brand good?
Otherwise, what is the best pet store brand?
Thx!
yeah, the fair goldfish are not usually the healthiest goldfish to start with. With that said though, you need to provide your goldfish with a happy home so it can stay healthy. Take a look at the post on goldfish bowl size and goldfish water to get started. best of luck with your goldfish
Goldfish are mainly vegetarians but the do eat protein too. so if you feed it insects, they will eat them but you also need to give your goldfish some greens. You can buy goldfish food online too; get a goldfish flake food if you want a well balanced diet.
Is the injury do to some sort of physical altercation or did it cut itself on something in the tank? It’s really hard to say what that might be. Take a look at the goldfish diseases post in the goldfish aquarium section to see if your goldfish has any of those illnesses. If it’s around it’s eye, it could be a pop eye type of disease. I would take a picture of it and show it to the fish expert at your local pet store.
About a week ago I won two fish at the fair. Just a day later one of the fish had already died. I then went to walmart to replace it. The two fish seemed to be doing fine until I wokeup this morning to find that the second fish I won at the fair had died. I am now only down to the fish I bought at walmart. Should I be concerned for it also, or did the other two die simply because they were fair fish?
