Beginner: Sick Goldfish
Sick Goldfish: Common Problem
First: Don’t attempt to pick up or handle your goldfish because it will rub off the protective slime coat layer which helps the fish stay healthy.
Goldfish Constipation: Symptoms include the goldfish floating on its side on top of the water, or it has a swollen belly. The Cure is to add greens to it’s diet, Peas are a great food to include in their diet. It helps like a laxative. Live plants will also help with this problem.
Swim Bladder: Symptoms include an inability to stay upright. the goldfish might face downwards, on its side or even upside down. It is not to be confused with constipation but treating the goldfish with the same methods as stated above can help minimize the effects of swim bladder. There is no cure to swim bladder as it a genetics problem. read more about swim bladder disease
Goldfish Ich or Ick: Ichtyopthirius Symptoms include white spots on the body or fins and sometimes rapid gill movement. Cure it by cleaning your tank entirely (to remove the parasite that may be growing) and contacting your pet store for for Ich medication. However, those can be rough on goldfish so try using salt at a level of (3 teaspoons per gallon). Not all fish can handle this so make sure you only treat your goldfish.

Hi…
I have two goldfish in a bowl. among them one fish having some injury on its head. It looks puffy white and red…
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I hope you got the help you needed to treat your goldfish. It sounds like it could have been picked on by the other fish at the pet store or it could be an infection. If you treat it, it should heal. I would recommend getting a slime coat protector to help encourage healing. I’d also ask the fish expert at the pet store what he would suggest. You can snap a photo of your fish and show it to them.
I got an ordinary, non-fancy, “comet” goldfish earlier this week from Petco. When I got him into his bowl at my office, I noticed he has a pretty big sore on the front of his dorsal fin- bad enough that skin and scales are missing, and the front couple fin bones are exposed. The area immediately around the wound is blotchy, red, and white. He also has a few scrapes and missing scales elsewhere on his body. Nevertheless, he is eating a lot and seems to be pretty active.
Three questions: Is he likely to heal alright? Is there anything I can do to help him get better? How did he get those injuries- was he attacked by other fish at the pet store; did he rub against the tank too hard; or is he simply sick and infected?
First time goldfish keeper here. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

This is true. and also don’t over feed them.
FEED YOUR FISH FISHFOOD
That sounds like ammonia poisoning. you need to remove the ammonia from the water by change the water much more often. you might consider getting a larger tank size but for sure change the water daily until your fish looks better. add a slime coat protector to encourage healing.
i got a goldfish about a month ago i’d say, and it has grown a spot on its nose that was white at first, but turned black. i’ve also noticed growing black parts on his fins and tail. i got some stuff from walmart that’s supposed to take care of these things, but they’ve shown no results. i keep my goldfish in a bowl. do you have any suggestions?
It’s hard to say if there is anything wrong with your goldfish. It might need more oxygen if he hangs out at the surface or there other water parameters are off like the ph. A newly introduced goldfish might not even want to eat for a day or two. Plus a goldfish can go more than two weeks without eating. Don’t feed your goldfish anything other than goldfish food. So you can just wait until you have a chance to buy goldfish food tomorrow or the next day. You should also buy a dechlorinator to remove chlorine from the water and buy an ammonia and ph test kit. High ammonia levels means you need to change 25-50% of the tank water. good luck.
